London: Faber and Faber, 1954. First Edition. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition, first printing. An advance presentation copy inscribed by William Golding to his next-door neighbors and dated ten days before publication, reading "To Mr and Mrs Nelles with the author's regards 7/9/54" with his name not signed. Bound in original red cloth with titles in white on spine. Near Fine with slight fading to cloth, bleeding to edges of front paste down and several tiny spots to textblock edge. In a Very Good or better unclipped dust jacket with light bleeding from cloth to blindside, light waviness to front panel, light edge wear, short tear at bottom of front spine joint and two short splits to rear spine joint. An allegorical tale of children stranded on a coral island and their disastrous attempt to govern themselves. It was Golding's first novel, who was a middle-aged school teacher when he wrote it. Description:
London: Faber, 1954. A first edition, first printing published by Faber in 1954. A fine book with just a little toning to the pages. White titles on red cloth very clear and bright. No inscriptions. In a very good clipped wrapper with some light internal reinforcement to the spine. Spine browned, with a little wear to the extremities. Accompanied by the rare wrap-around band. In a custom-made clamshell box with titles. E. M Forster's own copy, with his book label. Much of Forster's library was sold when the author moved from his family home at West Hackhurst in Abinger Hammer, Surrey in 1946. After taking residence in Kings College Cambridge (with a much reduced library), he continued to give books away as he acquired new ones. Most of his final was sold in 1971 by Heffer and Sons. There were many first edition copies in this, but not this particular copy. Forster was pivotal to the success of 'Lord of the Flies', talking Faber into taking on the unknown writer. It was slow to sell,… Read More

Description:
London: Faber and Faber, 1954. First Edition. Very Good+. An extremely rare advance proof copy of the first edition. According to Quill and Brush's 2007 Author Price Guide, Faber produced perhaps ten copies in this format and according to bookseller Ken Lopez noting in 1998, there were four known extant copies. Though it's possible since 1998 a copy or so may have surfaced, the number of extant copies would still range between four and below about ten. That being said, none have appeared in auction records as far as we can deduce, and this format remains truly scarce.Bound in publisher's buff wraps printed in black, utilizing a paper stock which differs from that used in the published edition.Very Good with lean to binding, wear, light foxing, soiling and light sunning to wraps with light loss at spine ends, pages toned. Ink notation to front cover and rubber stamp "keeping" to first sheet. A rare advance format of a major novel in 20th Century literature.

Description:
London: Faber and Faber,, 1954. The thing is - fear can't hurt you any more than a dream First edition, first impression. Golding had great difficulties in finding a publisher for this, his first novel, and the initial print run of 3,040 copies sold slowly. It is now regarded as one of the outstanding achievements of 20th-century British literature and is a perennial choice in lists of the greatest novels of all time. This copy has an appropriate ownership inscription. A certain David Wainwright has signed and dated the book in the year following publication. As an alumni of Highgate School, he has noted "in memoriam: School House, 1945-46..." and, therefore, perhaps acknowledges potential savagery under the surface of his former fellow pupils. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in white. With dust jacket. Spine very slightly sunned and with minor leaning; unclipped jacket worn at head and foot of spine with some loss, spine rubbed, some toning, other minor nicks and tears: a very good copy… Read More

Description:
London: Faber and Faber,, 1954. The thing is - fear can't hurt you any more than a dream First edition, first impression, of Golding's first and best known novel, handsomely bound. Golding had great difficulties in finding a publisher, and even when he succeeded, the initial print run of 3,040 copies sold slowly. However, based on enthusiastic reviews and word of mouth, sales picked up, and the work is now regarded as one of the outstanding achievements of 20th-century British literature, a perennial choice in critics' lists of the greatest novels of all time. In 1955 The New Times recognized the book as "superbly written", and described it as "an allegory on human society today... with undertones of 1984 and High Wind in Jamaica, this brilliant work is a frightening parody of man's return to that state of darkness from which it took him thousands of years to emerge" (Stern). Octavo (181 x 116 mm). Recent red morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, spine lettered in gilt, compartments and covers ruled in gilt,… Read More
