Description:
London: Pan Books, 1968. [Thriller] FIRST PAPERBACK EDITION. Octavo (18 x 11cm), pp.172; [4], ads. Publisher's sofcovers priced at 3/6. Expected toning else a crisp, fine copy of the first Travis McGee novel, a particularly elusive title; the British hardback and paperback first printings are inexplicably scarce. John D. MacDonald is best remembered for his 'enforcer' character Travis McGee, and his 1957 novel The Executioners, which was filmed as Cape Fear. The UK paperback features a supporting quote from James Bond author Ian Fleming, which did not appear on any other printing. This copy is from the comprehensive archive assembled by Jon Gilbert (pencil signature within). His comprehensive guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography. Gilbert D30.
