Description:
Boston: L. Prang & Co, 1860. Very Good. An unusual pre-Civil War point of sale broadside and mirror in the original wooden frame. The frame measures 16¼" x 23½", with interior gold painted dividers into four compartments, each glazed. The large bottom compartment displays a color lithograph of the steamer *Massachusetts* surmounted by a mirror, and flanked by letterpress broadsides describing the Boston & Charleston Steamship line's two ships (on the left) and a list of ports and rates (on the right). Modest rubbing to the frame, very good. The color lithograph was printed by the Prussian born lithographer Louis Prang soon after he bought out his partner and went into business by himself in Boston in 1860. Printed underneath the *Massachusetts* (still using some sails) are the names of the firm's two captains: Rodney Baxter and F. A. Sampson. Baxter, a pioneer sea captain from Cape Cod captained the firm's other steamer, the *South Carolina*, running from Boston to South Carolina. The…

[Boston: Manufactured by L. Prang & Co., 1864].. Central Park: Thirty-six chromolithographic cards, each 4¼ x 2½ inches. Tipped to three album sheets. Street Scenes: Twelve chromolithographic cards, each 4¼ x 2½ inches, tipped to matching album sheet. Light soiling or foxing to a few images. Near fine. A marvelous collection of chromolithographic views of New York City's Central Park, issued by the renowned firm of Louis Prang and Company. In 1864, Prang issued numerous series of cards, often showing nature scenes, and meant to be collected and tipped into albums. Among these series, one of the rarest is the present series of thirty-six views of Central Park. When these cards were issued, Central Park was still a new attraction in New York City. In 1857 a competition had been announced to submit designs for the park, and the winning entry was the "Greensward Plan" submitted by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. The park opened later in 1857. This collection contains views of some of the…

Description:
n.p.: n.p., 1890. Fine.. Signed original watercolor for a line of greeting cards by Louis Prang, "The Father of the American Christmas Card." Depicted is a lovely little girl in a blue dress wearing a fancy hat. She is holding a flower in a cup. Surrounding her is an elaborate array of roses and foliage. Humphrey was one of the first great American women illustrators paving the way for Jessie Willcox Smith, Grace Drayton and the many other women illustrators of the early 20th century. Humphrey is also known for being Humphrey Bogart's mother (and she used her son as a model for many of her pictures). Prang's wild success in creating chromolithographed -color printed - holiday and greeting cards made images like this a major fashion in the late 19th-century United States. An absolutely beautiful portrait. 11.25'' x 9.5''. Single watercolor signed by Humphrey with initials in lower left-hand corner of image.

[New York: James Sutton & Co., 1874].. Oil chromolithograph on heavy board, 10¾ x 15½ inches, with facsimile of original label on the verso reading: "Aldine Chromo for 1874." Minor soiling, slightly darkened. Very good. Framed. A striking chromolithograph of the Cliffs of Green River, Wyoming Territory, made to exactly replicate an oil painting by Thomas Moran and constituting the earliest example of chromolithography produced after Moran's work. This is among the earliest western publications of Moran, preceding his work for Hayden's famed Yellowstone Park portfolio by two years, and was produced by the same chromolithographer, Louis Prang - the greatest color printer of his day. This chromolithograph was originally issued as one of a pair, along with another titled, THE WHITE MOUNTAINS - NEW HAMPSHIRE. The origin of these prints has been little known, but they were produced as a free gift for subscribers to an art periodical called THE ALDINE, published by James Sutton & Company of New York.…

Boston: L. Prang, 1876. First American Edition. An important work on colour theory written by the German professor of Meteorology Wilhelm von Bezold (1837-1907), originally published in German in 1874. As became exceedingly popular since the time of Michel-Eugène Chevruel's famous De la loi du contraste simultané des couleurs published in 1839, von Bezold's work combines the science of colour with its practical application to the booming dyeing industry plus the decorative and ornamental arts. Melbourne: Reed and Harris, 1945. First Edition. Paperback. Good. Melbourne, Reed and Harris, 1945. Quarto, 44 pages with 12 full-page illustrations by Albert Tucker. Pictorial card covers (with French flaps) a little marked, tanned and foxed, with the spine a little sunned and chipped; edges discoloured; some foxing and occasional signs of use internally; a good copy. 'In this book the author has reversed the general procedure and presents a sophisticated book for adults written by a child. The fact that the child, Julian Prang, had to be invented in no way detracts from the reader's enjoyment. Rather, characters such as Julian Prang are known to all of us, even though young Julian has an over-developed literary tasted for such exotic literature as the works of the Marquis de Sade.... A word must be said about the excellent illustrations by Albert Tucker. Tucker has conceived the sadistic personality of this child prodigy in a lusty and delightful fashion, fully in keeping with the verse' (from the…
