About This Item

This is a vintage set of "DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA" by Alexis de Tocqueville. 1948; Alfred A. Knopf; New York. Complete set in two volumes with original slip case. Volume I contains a facsimile of the title page of the first French edition of 1835. Volume II contains a facsimile of the title page of the first American edition of 1840. "The Henry Reeve text as revised by Francis Brown. Now further corrected nd edited with introduction, editorial notes, and bibliographies by Phillips Bradley."

Condition:
Both volumes have clean covers and spines with bright gilt; sharp corners. Both volumes are tightly bound with no cracks. The only notable condition issue with the volumes is that the xv-xviii leaf within the Introduction section of vol 1 has detached. Otherwise, the pages are clean and white and appear unread with only a small stain spot near the center of Introduction page lxxxix in vol 1. The dust jackets are price clipped at the front flaps; tanning to the spines, and tanning to the back cover of vol 1, and to the front cover of vol 2. Overall the volumes are in Very Good condition. The slip case has some light soiling and areas on the bottom panel where the top layer of paper has peeled; wear along the perimeter of the opening.

Synopsis

De la démocratie en Amérique (published in two volumes, the first in 1835 and the second in 1840) is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville on the United States in the 1830s and its strengths and weaknesses. A literal translation of its title is On Democracy in America, but the usual translation of the title is simply Democracy in America. It is regarded as a classical account of the democratic system of the United States and has been used as an important reference ever since.
