Owner's signature on the front end-page, someone by the last name of "Ripley". The map is adhered to the title page and has ripped a little of the title page near the binding. Appendices. Articles. The pages are decently clean with no creasing, but there is some browning/foxing from age. There are a few inlaid pieces of paper, which look like they were used as bookmarks and have left a mark and the top of pages 12, 32, 128, 188, 193, and 227; there is also light, graphite marginalia on these pages and several others throughout the text. vi-xxxvi pp. 302 pp. Purple cover boards with design; The edges of the cover boards as well as the spine are sunned and are discolored and brown. The Spine has gilt lettering. The board edges, corners, and spine headband have some visible rubbing and small indents. Overall very good condition, especially for the age of the book. Full refund if not satisfied.

Synopsis

De la démocratie en Amérique (published in two volumes, the first in 1835 and the second in 1840) is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville on the United States in the 1830s and its strengths and weaknesses. A literal translation of its title is On Democracy in America, but the usual translation of the title is simply Democracy in America. It is regarded as a classical account of the democratic system of the United States and has been used as an important reference ever since.
