Description:
1633 Alexander the Great Quintus Curtius Rufus Military Conquest Greece Elzevier
"Nothing can be lasting when reason does not rule."
― Quintus Curtius Rufus, Histories of Alexander the Great
This famous and important work by Quintus Curtius was inspired by the celebrated Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great and was written, more than likely, during the reign of Caligula in Rome. The style of Quintus Curtius's writing was a directly in line with Livy, whose work on the people of Rome greatly influenced the writing of "Histories of Alexander the Great." Curtius describes the strange and mysterious things that Alexander the Great encounters on his military expedition and does so with great historical acumen. This book, along with Livy and Tacitus, should always be considered part of the canon of ancient world texts.
This 1633 edition was published by Daniel Elzevier and edited by Daniel Heinsius, and was line-for-line reissue of the first edition. The first edition was immensely popular and the… Read More

Description:
1610 Claudius Aelianus Varia Historia Greco-Roman History Mythology Greek Latin

Claudius Aelianus was a 2nd-century Roman orator known for his lessons in Greek and works that describe Greco-Roman lifestyle and world-views. Only two of his works have survived, one being 'Varia Historia' – a collection of anecdotes, maxims, biographical sketches, and reports of natural wonders. Aelianus describes mythological heroes, living rulers and Caesars, Olympic athletes, religious beliefs, funeral customs, Greek art, fishing techniques, serpent and animal worship, styles of dress and costumes, and the lives of Greek and Roman playwrights.

'Varia Historia' is generally considered to be a 3rd-century work, even though the first edition was not printed until 1545. This 1610 edition was published in Latin / Greek parallel; and while the title page states it was published in Lyon (Lugduni), it was actually published in Geneva by Jean de Tournes. Description:
1685 Vossius Etymologicum Latin Language Etymology Dictionary Vellum FOLIO

Gerardus Vossius was a 16th-century Dutch classical theologian known for being one of the first to treat theological dogmas and non-Christian religions from a historical point of view, rather than the more accepted theological. His works of rhetoric were widely popular and were used as textbooks during and after his lifetime. He followed Aristotelian thought and was influenced not only by Aristotle, but also by Cicero and other ancient philosophers.

Vossius's "Etymologicum" was a lengthy Latin language study, gathered and edited as a dictionary. This 1685 edition was published as part of the complete works of Vossius, printed in Amsterdam by Blaeu.

Description:
1665 Puritan GREEK Bible & Common Prayer & Psalms of David John Field Cambridge

An incredibly rare 17th-century John Field Greek version of the Psalms of David and Book of Common Prayer

The Cambridge Holy Bible, printed completely in Greek, was "sometimes known as the 'Preaching Bible'." (Herbert 697). John Field printed Greek Bibles are extremely rare and popular amongst Greek scholars and still used by 21st-century preachers.

This John Field Bible is 'Variation A' of his Greek Bible. According to D&M,
"the figure in the oval device Alma Mater Contabrigia on the title page is holding the sun in the right hand and the cup in the left, while the motto Hinc lucem… begins at the bottom on the left side. Field's own original edition!" (D&M 4701) *

Darlow and Moule notes that
"Field's edition was counterfeited page for page, by John Hayes, a Cambridge printer, who executed an edition in 1684, to which he put Field's name, and date of 1665."

This edition of the Book of Psalms is NOT the Hayes… Read More

Description:
1688 Abraham Cowley English Poetry Mistress Motto Pindar Ode Davideis Sylva RARE

"What shall I do to be for ever known,
And make the Age to come own?"
I shall like beasts or common people die,
Unless you write my elegy." – Abraham Cowley, The Motto

Abraham Cowley was one of the leading English poets during the 17th-century. This charming and rare edition was the last edition of the original one-volume printing. Following this edition, the works were printed in multiple volumes. Famous poems, such as 'The Motto,' 'The Mistress,' 'Ode to Pindar,' and 'Davideis' are all included in this collection. The Pindaric Ode is especially interesting in that Cowley attempted to reproduce Pindar's works, but in doing so, he misinterpreted the metrical patterns, and, in doing so, did not accurately reflect Pindar's poetry. He did, however, create one of the most famous odes ever written, which would become the influence for William Wordsworth's famous ode "Intimations of Immortality."

1677 FAMED 1ed Raphael ART Vatican Frescoes Pope Sixtus Renaissance Woodcuts
Raphael was one of the most famous and important Italian painters of the Renaissance. Most of his work is still regularly appreciated and studied in museums all over the world. Though, perhaps the most famous collection of Raphael paintings is in the Vatican museum, where spaces now known as the Raphael Rooms feature exquisite full-wall frescoes of his artwork.
Italian engraver Pietro Saint Bartoli published a series of engravings of Raphael's frescoes in the 17th-century. The plates themselves feature the text 'Vaticani Palatii Xystis', referring to the Vatican palace under Pope Sixtus IV who constructed portions of the Vatican for art such as the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Library.
Bartoli's collection of Raphael engravings was dedicated to Cardinal Carlo Massimo following his death in 1677 – a collection of 43 stunning oblong folio illustrations!
