First edition (published 1832-38), octavo, three volumes; xii, 388; 409; 509pp. In contemporary half calf (lightly worn), spines divided into five compartments with gilt rolls and double fillets, gilt lettered titles and volume numbers to second and fourth compartments respectively. Early ownership labels to front endpapers, neat early ink ownership names to head of each title page, early pencil ownership inscription to opening blank of volume three, half-titles present in all three volumes. Clean attractive copy in first edition of Warren's often macabre tales that have received considerable scholarly attention as a source for Edgar Allan Poe's works of mystery and the supernatural.

Presentation copy signed by Rockwell Kent on the front free end paper of Volume I, "Inscribed with affectionate friendship to Putzie - Rockwell Kent, 1950." Volumes II and III bear Rockwell Kent-illustrated bookplates of Marie Luise Hinrichs. Near Fine. Narrow strips of sunning to spine cloth at ends, light rubbing to cloth at extremities and light abrasions to black topstains. Pages toned and with offsetting from illustrations. Acetate wrappers are wrinkled and shrunken with age, as is typical, and show a bit of chipping and edge wear, with some separation starting between the acetate and a paper flap on both volumes II and III; acetate on volume II with light staining. Volume I of The Invasion with owner name stamp on title page; neat owner name on first page of text of volume II of The Invasion and volume II of Borodino. Bookplate in volume 1 of Before Tilsit and volume I of The Invasion. A handsome set of the first American edition of this classic of Russian literature. Translated from the French edition by Clara Bell.

London: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine and Co, 1891. First Edition. Near Fine. 3 Volumes. First edition, first printing, first issue. Bound in contemporary half-leather binding over marbled paper covered boards, with all edges marbled and marbled endsheets; binder's stamp of Mudie to verso of front free endpaper. Near Fine with light rubbing to bindings, spines slightly sunned, foxing to pages and former owner name to front blank of each volume. A Victorian tripple-Decker in lovely contemporary binding. Although this novel initially received mixed reviews upon publication, it is now considered a major work of 19th-century literature.

Harper and Brothers circa 1915. All ten volumes are in fair condition with dark green cloth boards with decorative gilt spines. Texts are clean and unmarked. Boards are sturdy. Bindings in Volumes II and IV are weakening and Volume I shows slight separation. Covers show some stains and fading. Edge wear is primarily at spines. Gilt lettering and decoration on spines is faded.

However, Twain sought to show his level of literary ability and expertise with the 1894 classic 'Tom Sawyer Abroad'.
Jules Verne created several adventure novels, many of which are still well-known and popular today; however, Twain wanted to parody the Verne-style adventure. In 'Tom Sawyer Abroad,' Twain puts Tom and Huck in a futuristic hot air balloon ride to Africa where they encounter world wonders, robbers, and other adventure tropes.
