vii+246 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/4") bound in original black cloth with gilt lettering to spine and blind stamped pictorial chess board to front cover. Signed by Capablanca. (Betts:11-24) First edition.

Published shortly after he had won the World's Chess Championship. Reprinted 1922, 1923, 1926, 1931, 1937, 1941, 1942, 1945, 1946, 1948 and reset edition published in 1951. A knowledge of the elements is assumed. A graded course of instruction, with a general first chapter, the subjects of which are re-examined in more detail in succeeding chapters. Part two comprises 14 games played by Capablanca, with annotations, including notes on the openings.

José Raúl Capablanca y Graupera was a Cuban chess player who was world chess champion from 1921 to 1927. One of the greatest players of all time, he was renowned for his exceptional endgame skill and speed of play. Due to his achievements in the chess world, mastery over the board and his relatively simple style of play he was nicknamed the "Human Chess Machine". He is widely regarded as the most naturally talented chess player in history.

The 2nd American Chess Congress was held at the Kennard House in Cleveland, 5-15 December 1871. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. The Ohio newspapers have more details, including dates for most of the games.
The players: George Henry Mackenzie led an interesting life away from the chessboard. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5394) First edition.The chess club in Hannover, Germany celebrated its fifty year anniversary by organizing a small, international chess master tournament in 1926. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. The 1958 contest was held at the Hotel Provincial in Mar del Plata. and is part of an iconic beachfront complex, built in 1946 by the celebrated architect Alejandro Bustillo.

An elementary text, containing a brief survey of chess literature (Chess and chess writers), a description of the elements, a chapter giving the first few moves of the openings, and other sections on "ends of games" (elementary mates), Games actually played (5 examples), prob3ems with examples (7) and general rules for playing the game, with a list of places where chess is played (in England) and a list of chess periodicals. The American edition is slightly re-arranged pagination, otherwise as the English edition except for the omission of the final list of places where played and periodicals.

Description:
19 unpaginated tournament bulletins (approximately 55 pages) with tables. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2) bound in individual bulletin wrappers. First edition.The first Argentine Chess Championship was held in 1921. The Champion's title was granted after victorious or drawn match between previous champion and challenger, a winner of Torneo Mayor. The matches were done away in 1950 year, except for 1952. From 1953 the tournament was changed to an all-round invitation, although in many cases it was played with the Swiss system.
The 33rd championship was played in 1955 with Miguel Najdorf the victor in a twenty player contested event. Hector Rossetto was a clear second with a score of 14.5 one and half points behind the leader, followed by Erich Eliskases at 13.5.Condition:Edge wear, occasional notes, punch hole to hinges, hand drawn cross table indicating game pages else a very good copy.
