Publisher unknown, 1784.Mirabeau's classic and important work against injustice and the exercise of arbitrary and absolute power. Widely read at the time, it added fuel to the fire of the coming French Revolution. This 1784 edition includes the second part of this famous work, dealing with life in prison, which was to be destroyed by the Prussian authorities at the request of the French government, and may be considered rare. This edition also includes L'Éspion Dévalisé by Baudouin de Guémadeuc, (attributed to Mirabeau). 630+ pages. 20 cm x 12.5 cm x 4 cm. Contemporary French calf binding; no foxing on the great majority of pages.

Beautifully bound in contemporary red morocco, the covers with outer black rule and ornately blind tooled around a central octagon panel, the backs tooled in gilt with black morocco labels and gilt lettering, all edges gilt, marbled end pages, an altogether excellent example of fine French bookbinding of the period. With four hors-texte illustrations copper engraved by Frilley, Cousin and Durand after Tony Johannot, Pujol, Devéria and Henri Monnier. Near Fine, occasional moderate toning, one signature in each volume evenly browned indicating the use of a different paper. . First Edition. Morocco. Near Fine/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Extremely rare first edition in exceptional near fine condition in elegant contemporary (circa 1850) private binding. The author of this first comprehensive treatise on administration was a prominent French lawyer and politician of the mid-19th Century. A member of the Chambre des Députés, his book is based on a two-part article he contributed to the Revue des Deux Mondes 1841. It appears that most copies of this first edition were destroyed by fire. A second, enlarged edition appeared in 1852 in 2 vols.

Very Good mInus, old dampstain mostly to margins and where in text not affecting legibility, rear end page edge chipped, small chip to morocco at head of spine.
