Description:
1874 second Canadian edition. Hardcover volume recently recased using original boards and spine, original blanks retained. Paginates: blanks, xii, 304, [26], 12 unpaginated plates, blanks. Complete as issued. Pagination differs from US editions for several reasons: there is a preface to the Canadian edition, 26 pages of ads, and text was reset using a fancier broader font, hence the increased number of pages. Text is the same. Overall condition is Very Good: Interior condition of text and plates is mostly spectacular with minimal foxing or evidence of use, binding is sound, old pencil initials of owner on dedication page, minor foxing to frontis. There is old water injury affecting mostly the ads in back (see image) but injury does not affect text or plates. Two leaves of ads are torn and missing about one quarter. Has stamp "U.N.B. Library" (University of New Brunswick?) on top and bottom edges but no other library markings. One of the most well known captivity narratives. See Howes K62; Rader 2153;… Read More

Ours was the race that gave the world its measure of heroism, its standard of physical prowess. Ours was the race that taught the world that avarice veiled by any name is crime. Ours were the people of the blue air and the green woods, and ours the faith that taught men to live without greed and to die without fear. Ours were the fighting men that, man to man–yes, one to three–could meet and win against the world. But for our few numbers, our simple faith that others were as true as we to keep their honor bright and hold as bond… Read More

St. Paul, Minnesota:: Strong Silent Type Press,, 2021.. Edition of 15. 14 x 19.5"; 26 pages including pastedowns. Printed in relief from laser cut blocks. Verdana font. Annigoni paper. Drum leaf binding. Bound in illustrated boards with cloth spine. Signed and numbered by the artist. Fred Hagstrom: "'Pipeline' documents the ongoing protests against the construction of the Enbridge Line 3 oil pipeline that will take tar sands oil from Canada to Superior Wisconsin. It is actually a new line along a new route, leaving the old pipeline in the ground. The line crosses land that is held by tribes without honoring treaty rights. It is seen as a threat to the sources of water in northern Minnesota, including the Mississippi and numerous wetlands and streams in the Lake Superior watershed. Tribes are also concerned about the effects of possible spills on wild rice beds. The oil from this line will greatly add to emissions."
