Rare and Antiquarian Books

XVIth Century Books

In addition to the many rare and collectible modern books available on Biblio, we are also proud to present our booksellers' collection of antiquarian books printed in the 16th Century. Many of these featured books are printed in Italian, French, and Spanish, and many of them contain intricate and very rare illustrations. There was a greater variety in how books were bound, so many of the books offered here are bound in leather or cloth, which adds to their value and scarcity. Many books and ephemera printed in the 1500's are unique and one of a kind, and many contain fascinating glimpses into the cultures and lives of those present in that tumultuous period of history. Because of their age and delicacy, these books are quite fragile and require great care when handling. Be sure to read the book descriptions carefully and feel free to contact the bookseller directly should you have any questions about treatment or preservation, as you want to protect your investment as much as possible.

Description:
Hardcover. Fine. 4to. Bound in 20th-century 1/4-vellum over marbled boards. Strasbourg: Matthias Schürer, July 1510. Second Strasbourg edition of Erasmus heavily annotated collection of Greek and Latin proverbs. Printed in Roman and Greek types. This is the original version, containing 818 adages, which is considerably shorter than the later expanded versions published under the title Adagiorum chiliades. (Adams E-420; Bezzel, Erasmusdrucke, 50; Van der Haeghen, Bibliotheca Erasmiana, p.25-6; Bibl. Belgica II, 276: no. E.61; Muller, Strasbourg II, p. 179, no. 45.) The Adagia could only have been possible in the new world of European education, in which careful attention to a broader range of classical texts produced a much fuller picture of the literature of antiquity. Its impact has been long lasting. Such popular expressions such as one step at a time, between a rock and a hard place, break the ice, an iron in the fire, looking a gift horse in the mouth, and many other sayings can trace their… Read More

Description:
Quintus Curtius Rufus, De rebus gestis Alexandri Magni. Cum annotationibus D. ErasmiFolio. [4], LXXXIX leaves; [10], 124 pages. Late sixteenth (?) century leather; light scuffing, hinges cracked but cords holding tightly; insect damage to text block with loss of text throughout; margins in Orosius trimmed close, affecting title image. First printing of Erasmus' critical edition of Quintus Curtius. This first century Roman biography of Alexander the Great was an early Renaissance bestseller, with editions from at least a dozen printers throughout Europe by 1517. Erasmus brought it as reading material on a voyage to England in 1517, and finding the text incomplete and corrupt, he prepared his own critical edition. This was first published by his friend Strasbourg printer Matthias Schürer in 1518. Erasmus' version proved so popular that five more printers had issued their own editions of his text by 1541; these in turn were reprinted a total of five more times by 1575. This first edition is… Read More

Very rare edition of the earlier Spanish sentimental romance, originally published in Valencia in 1513.
About the authorship of Qüestión de amor, one of the most intriguing among the Spanish sentimental romances:
"In a series of articles on the authorship of the earlier sentimental romance Qüestión de amor, I suggested first that the anonymous author was a member of the aristocratic Cardona family (1994a) basing this attribution on a series of clues deeply imbedded within the text itself – in other words, evidence interior to the work. Furthermore, I suggested that the author was the poet Alonso de Cardona whose work was found in the Cancionero General of 1511 (1994b and 2006). Finally,… Read More
