Description:
Paris: The Obelisk Press, 1934. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition, first printing of this literary high spot. One of 1,000 copies, in publisher's original printed wrappers with price of 50 fr. intact, Front wrapper printed with Maurice J. Kahane's striking crab and globe design. Near Fine with browning and light soiling to wraps, light edge wear, top corner lightly bumped and light creasing to wraps. Contents tanned. Housed in a custom chemise slipcase. The scarce first appearance of Miller's scandalously erotic novel, which would eventually test the boundaries of free speech in America and become a landmark of 20th century literature, rare in the original wrappers. Since so many copies of the first edition were seized by authorities in England and the U.S., The Obelisk Press discarded the printed wrappers in favor of less conspicuous plain ones for the second and subsequent editions. Shifreen & Jackson A9a.

Shifreen & Jackson A9j. Miller's dear friend Emil Schnellock's copy, with a full-page inscription by Miller to Schnellock on the front free endpaper: "Fredericksburg, VA, Dear Emil, I don't remember the original dedication but this will do - like Shakespeare's horse you talk about - "for all time". To my friend Emil who standing on a street corner pushed me into that world I always wanted to see and finally saw. Hallelujah! Henry, 12/1/44." Description:
New York: Grove Press, 1961. First authorized and first trade edition issued in America. With a long introduction by Karl Shapiro and a preface by Anais Nin. 8vo., publisher's original cloth backed boards in dustjacket. xxxiii, 318 pp. A handsome, clean and pleasing copy, some light evidence of age or shelving to the dustjacket, the book very fine. FIRST AUTHORIZED AND FIRST TRADE EDITION ISSUED IN AMERICA. Of the book, John Ciardi said, [it] "is a substantial work of art. The violence of Miller's attack on orthodoxy and falseness is indispensable to his human vision of things. In [the book] the test is ferocity, a ferocious and yet naive sincerity that castigates all sham. It cannot fail to be moral finally, because the ferocity is radically moral. And because the author is an artist--a very good one, as the continued 'underground life' of the book attests." Ours is a very nice copy of this classic.

New York: Medusa, 1940. First U.S. edition -- albeit an unauthorized one -- of Miller's first and most famous book. One of only 1000 copies in the first-issue binding of light green linen boards with gilt spine lettering. According to Shifreen & Jackson, an overrun of 200 to 500 unbound sheets were printed for later distribution, accounting for the nine variants that followed this one. Spine lettering rubbed but readable, spine and board edges toned to tan, green topstain faded, endpapers poorly glued and/or re-glued. Altogether good or perhaps better. Issued without a dust jacket.

Description:
This notable pirated first American edition, limited to 1000 copies by Jacob Brussel under the pseudonym 'New York / Medusa,' is a remarkable piece of literary history. Bound in purple paper wraps with a plain spine that has faded to beige, it exhibits uneven sun-fading on the covers and some wrinkling on the spine. This rare first paperback edition, printed in Mexico, significantly predates the authorized Grove Press American edition by over two decades. Despite its condition showing signs of age, this edition is a collector's gem, offering a unique glimpse into the controversial early circulation of this seminal work.

Wrinkling to spine, uneven sunning to covers. Text block shows moderate age toning to edges and light age toning to pages generally, increasing to moderate age toning at top edge. Shelved in Case 2. "Up to the present, my idea of collaborating with myself has been to get off the gold standard of literature. My idea briefly has been to present a resurrection of the emotions, to depict the conduct of a human being in the stratosphere of ideas, that is, in the grip of delirium." (Henry Miller, Tropic of Cancer). Miller's entire body of work may well be characterized by the concept of "self-collaboration" -- breaking out of long-held literary molds to become reacquainted with his own self and experience. He highlighted this autobiographical or confessional shift by the inclusion of a quote from Emerson prefacing…
